Why approval more new coal mines?

mine expansion $745M while parent Peabody USA<US38M!!

No doubt a report by Peabody’s “expert”, Deloitte Access Economics, will be brandished about with élan. For the report finds the Wilpinjong<coal mine> expansion has net benefits of $745 million; something which may surprise Peabody’s shareholders as their entire <USA parent>company is now worth $US38M…This must mean one of two things; Deloitte is wrong, or markets are wrong (in which case, pin back the ears and dive into Peabody shares!)…We prefer option one though, partly as Deloitte’s coal price calculations were, “based on advice from [Peabody]”…This is the beauty of being an economic consultant; it doesn’t matter if you are right or wrong, you get paid regardless…By approving 20 new coal mines it was wrecking the price of Australia’s second largest export. Today’s proposition is to establish why.

Time to stop BigBiz undermining democracy, public money only for election funds

1455663426138Now that PM Turnbull needs to be seen to actually do something, especially since losing front bench colleagues because of shonky “donations”, will he prove to be big enough to get serious about the whole thing, no donations at all, election funds from equal public money? It’s time, surely, for this or National ICAC?

Time to shine for 24 hour solar power

gemasolar-sunny-590x443But now, as the value of storage becomes more apparent, solar towers may be about to have their day in the sun, with new projects planned in the solar rich regions of north and south America, and northern and southern Africa… US company Solar Reserve is putting the finishing touches to its 110MW Crescent Dunes facility in Nevada, is building another similar-sized plant in South Africa, and has a 260MW facility planned for Chile. Another Spanish group Abengoa is scheduled to build two 110MW solar tower and storage plants in Chile – presuming it gets over its current debt problems…

Predictability is key…Gemasolar plant doesn’t need gas back-up. It used to have a 17MW gas-fired generator but dismantled it when energy market rules were changed. It is no longer needed and the non-stop production records were set without gas…Torresol Energy, has now started construction of a 150MW solar tower with molten salt project at the huge Noor solar facility in Morocco….the South African version is expected to come in at around $US115/MWh. In Chile, Abengoa bid a price of less than $US100/MWh for the 250MW solar tower and storage and PV facility. That beat all bids from coal and gas generation… told RenewEconomy that he expected solar tower and storage prices to settle around $US80/MWh.

Were the Paris talks a failure?

7155392-4x3-340x255Last December, world leaders gathered in Paris to address the greatest moral challenge of our time – climate change. Grand rhetoric and champagne flowed, ambitious agreements were signed. And then it was back to the business of mining coal, oil and gas. So what did the Paris agreement mean and why are leaders so reluctant to act?

Highly recommended, one gem, 6 people at core of Walmart are more wealthy than bottom 150Million Americans!

Coalition restates wish to axe CEFC, then unveils its largest program

How can more uncertainty and nonsense taking us anywhere other than backwards?

“Of course, it’s been policy of federal Coalition to abolish the CEFC – along with ARENA, the CCA and the Climate Commission – ever since Tony Abbott was voted into power in 2013…In December 2013, Hunt himself described the CEFC as “incredibly speculative” in its operation…Under leadership of Malcolm Turnbull, Hunt <changed>… praised it for acting as catalyst to unlock private investment in clean technologies and for “achieving the remarkable result” of attracting $1.80 (more like $1.90 by latest estimates) of private finance for every dollar it invests.”

Greg Hunt’s dubious carbon claims exposed

Greg-Hunt …the auction takes care of less than 20% of necessary reductions, and delivers the bulk of them 5 years late. And that assumes they’ll be finished on time, which is a big assumption for projects that involve construction…cost of all this is $660M – more than a quarter of the $2.55 B available to the government.

At this rate, if the government conducted the remainder of its auctions this year and got exactly the same deal – a deal which was wildly better than anyone expected – it would be on track to reduce its emissions by about 183 million tonnes by 2025. That is 52 million tonnes short of the target, 5 years late. So while the auction may have gone much better than expected, Australia is still miles off meeting the target. Greg Hunt’s statement that we will “breeze past” the emissions reduction target is therefore either blind optimism, or plain dishonesty.

Greg Hunt named ‘best minister’ at Dubai summit

The award, created by Thomson Reuters, focuses on aspects including innovative leadership, quality and impact. The World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and auditing firm EY were among the judges of the award.

<Australia has>.. a renewable energy target to build as much large-scale renewable energy infrastructure in the next five years as had been built over the past 15 years, he said.<note – no new approvals since 2013, recent startups approved before 2013 from ARENA and CEFC, Hunt policy to abolish>

Mr Hunt said that Australia would work with the UAE to help create an international partnership for blue carbon, which is carbon captured by oceans and coastal ecosystems.

“Just as rainforests have an incredible capacity to absorb greenhouse gases, so do mangroves,” he said.  “Indeed, the UAE has been a pioneer in mangrove or blue carbon conservation with the benefits of emission reduction and marine biodiversity. “This partnership will aim to accelerate action on protecting our great mangrove systems and we invite other countries to work with us.”<note – look out for wild claims about how much CO2 mangroves can sequester, scammers to claim big bucks in next ERF auction and never any revelation about how many tonnes/hectare/year or audit of actual performance>

The minister said he was optimistic about achieving his goals. “This is because of the lessons that my father taught me about the value of a vision supported by a plan,” he said. “Above all else, I am optimistic because as a husband and a father … I can see the same truth that all parents see – in the end, humanity and the environment are both fundamentally worthy and fundamentally linked.” <so how about a bill, like in Holland by Urgenda, that Ministers cop personal liability for any future legal action which can prove dereliction of duty?>
