Scam ethanol petrol LibNats NSW

Now the ethanol mix which most drivers have avoided over the past 10 years must be called 94, it must be prominently displayed and everyone must sell it..petrol grades.. 91 basic/rough, 98  fancy, and, like 3 bears, one in the middle, 95, was just right. But now it’s gone, replaced by ethanol blend on orders of the NSW government. Servo owners will face massive fine they don’t sell 94 or display/promote strongly…an ethanol producer is likely to rake in an extra $150 million each and every year from the changes. Manildra has been courting political parties, federal and state, with huge donations for more than 15 years…less energy density, you burn more of it, about 3% more than you do with a 91 blended fuel…Howard gave it an excise free status, effectively blocking any foreign competitors and granting the ethanol industry $895 million in federal largess. The NSW legislation will mandate that 6% of annual sales at all petrol stations must be pure ethanol, but that effectively equates to 60% of all fuel sales, as ethanol is generally mixed at 10%. Ethanol mandates are also coming into force in Queensland in July. Other states are being pressured to follow suit.

<Note – Howard also how crazy exemption LPG in cars, but not for households or shrine BBQs?>

Heat will hurt poorest nations soonest

Very high temperatures are set to affect some of the world’s least developed countries before touching the richer nations that are more responsible for climate change.  Some of the world’s poorest people, who have contributed least to climate change, are likely to feel its effects sooner than most of their neighbours…Research by an international team of scientists has found that many of the planet’s poorest countries are likely to experience daily heat extremes caused by climate change before wealthier nations do.

<Note – per David Karoly – overnight low temperatures are increasing more than daytime highs so animal anatomy reduced chance of recovery>

India water by train in heatwave keeps city alive as cricket matches cancelled, farmers and animals suffer

7373556-3x2-700x467

In India, 330 million people across 10 states are in the grip of a crippling drought and heatwave…Supplies are so depleted in one city that it is entirely reliant on drinking water delivered daily by train… nine-hour journey from a dam near the coast has delivered parched Latur 2.5 million litres of water…Dams and rivers are all dry — result of successive poor monsoons and rampant depletion of groundwater by agriculture…For anyone without the often illegally sunk bores, the train has been their sole source of water for several weeks now.
“I stand in queue for water at 2:00am and my turn only comes around 6:00am.”
Elsewhere in the city, Vishwanath Gaikadh wipes the sweat away after he and his wife finish loading a tuk-tuk with water they have spent five hours waiting for.
“I queued up here yesterday, but didn’t get anything, so I returned empty handed.”

CSIRO Futures Forecast buried in fossil fuel technologies

The final scenario, called Weathering the Storm, pictures a world where geopolitical instability has increased, driven by climate change and regional conflicts over access to land, food and water – all of which leads to prolonged global economic stagnation…Under this latter, nightmarish scenario – something that may well emerge given the slow pace of decarbonisation and the rapid changes in climate – the report heralds an energy future for Australia that still revolves around fossil fuels…“With volatility and uncertainty surrounding most industries, the energy market relies on tried and tested energy sources such as coal rather than further developing the potential of renewables,” it predicts…“High oil and gas prices coupled with regional conflicts in oil supplying areas like the Middle East has also increased the attractiveness of coal.”..These conditions, the report says, will mean that “technologies that allow coal to replace oil or gas as a fuel will facilitate heightened demand for Australian coal.”..An example of one such technology offered in the report is DICE(Direct Injection Carbon Engine) – an adapted diesel engine that converts coal into a water-based slurry that maximises electricity generation and extends the life of the engine.

<Note Dice engine attempted and discarded by Third Reich in 1930’s, more recently also by CSIRO in 1970’s but Greg Hunt enthuses that DICE can make brown coal power “as clean as black coal”!!>

But Cape Grim recorded 480ppm CO2e in 2013 already

UntitledCO2eThis is at least getting plenty attention about climate change in mainstream media. Isn’t it sad that usual pundits are saying it’s just another number, of no particular significance. Equivalent readings in northern hemisphere have been up there previously but vastly more trees and greenery means values fluctuate down again when spring time plant growth kicks in. Annual fluctuations are much less at Cape Grim.  But main game is not just CO2 but CO2e.  Illustration here shows BOM/CSIRO recorded 480ppm as long ago as 2013. Is everybody guilty of self censorship about this?

Malcolm Turnbull was right: Direct Action is a waste of money

UntitledCarbETS

Labor has sought to differentiate itself from Coalition by unveiling a much higher emissions reduction target by 2020 and recognising that some form of carbon price – even if only an adaptation of a “baseline and credit scheme” – is needed to achieve it… Labor, though, is not seeking to make climate change a big issue; wary of the “electricity tax” accusations thrown at it by Turnbull, Hunt and others – even though the Coalition would have to adopt a similar scheme if it was to meet even its own modest emissions reduction targets… This much was confirmed by government-appointed review conducted by Energetics, and was to have been the main conclusion of a review by the Climate Change Authority, now dominated by Coalition appointees including the principal author of Direct Action. But this report has been buried until after the election.

>more> TheConversation shows “baseline and credit scheme” does penalise big emitters like coal but rewards gas power, sooner or later to become as much a stranded asset as coal

Help politic$ become donation and pollution free

UntitledNofossilThis is a call to action to allocate a little high quality time with your local Federal member next week. With such lack of action on climate change, all possibilities need to be actioned, up to and including “helping”, in person, at their offices…be there

Blockade world’s biggest coal exporting port

UntitledNewc

The science is clear. The only way we can prevent a climate catastrophe, is to keep fossil fuels in the ground. Today an unprecedented gathering of hundreds of every day people from all over Australia are meeting at the gateway of Australia’s carbon export to the world to draw a red line under the age of fossil fuels. Our message is clear: it’s time to break free from destruction and make way for a clean energy future.

Break Free From Fossil Fuels is a two-week global wave of escalated action to keep coal, oil + gas in the ground.

Shale gas, new map big fossil fuel frontier, from Lock the Gate reveals

UntitledAUshaleNew national mapping of mining tenements across Australia released today reveals that 37.3 per cent of the Australian continent is covered by coal and gas titles and applications. The interactive map, produced for the anti-coal and gas group, Lock the Gate, shows large areas of inland Australia being targeted for potential shale gas development.
