Antarctic buffer damage spurs ice break-up

Other ice shelves can survive for centuries if they don’t have surface meltwater – or if the water can run off easily,” Scambos said. “But with meltwater ponding and a legacy of weakening from sea ice loss, you can destroy a shelf in just a few weeks.”
The Antarctic ice sheet contains enough ice to raise sea level by approximately 57 metres (187 feet), about half the length of a soccer pitch. Worldwide, more than 100 million people currently live within 1m of mean sea level. – Climate News Network

Opinion | A Smorgasbord of Solutions for Global Warming – The New York Times

Interview with author of Drawdown, Paul Hawken, the top 100 ways to reverse climate change, ranked by tonnes of carbon, $cost and $return. Which do we do?..all of them, enough variety to engage with everybody.

“If you had asked every person at COP21 in Paris (us included) to name the top 10 solutions in any order, I don’t believe anyone would have gotten it even close. That is still true. After 50 years of global warming being in the public sphere, we didn’t know the top solutions to reversing it. And there’s a reason: We never measured and modeled the top solutions. Instead, sincere, well-meaning people profess their beliefs. You have a prominent scientist asserting that if we don’t go all in with nuclear power, we’re toast. Vastly untrue. You have journalists assuring us that if we go 100 percent solar, we’ll stabilize emissions. That’s a scientific howler, too. People who are earnestly guiding us to climatic stability have not done the math. That’s all we do at Project Drawdown: math.”

‘No gas supply shortage forecast,’ energy operator says

So no future for AGL plans to import LNG to Hastings, especially when Twiggy Forrest is looking at equivalent import to east coast supply network, located into big demand industrial Port Kembla. But AEMO report now makes this alternative look dodgy.

Easiest Way To Counterattack Russia — Go Electric

How about this for an argument to convince our federal government to reduce our dependency on “their” foreign oil based fuel and offer incentives to switch to cars burning “our” electric fuel, especially zero carbon renewables?

James Hansen: Can Carbon Capture Work?

Recent headlines grab about CO2 conversion into fuel has raised delusions with some folks but Hansen finds reported costings wildly optimistic. It’s much cheaper to not make emissions mess than cop the cost of clean up. Without clean up, CO2 blanket is up there for thousands of years.
