If it’s as cheap as $8 to 27Billion cost for renewables to replace ageing coal, it means $1,000 per person, OVER 20 YEARS, let’s do it ASAP, scheduled shutdowns to transfer demand and provide certainty for investment. To prolong agony with dirty coal is neither cheap, nor clean, nor reliable, risking sudden shutdowns when rising emissions unacceptable.

It’s now 30 years since James Hansen was in front of US Senate with convincing explanation about big risk from lack of action about global warming. How crazy is it that 87% of general population want action but politicians still not convinced.
There is no carbon budget for 1.5°C, which means that to achieve this outcome, from now on every tonne of emissions must be matched by a tonne of drawdown of atmospheric carbon.
From high altitude reflecting aerosols, temporary cooling is estimated at 0.7°C, so global warming is likely to accelerate in the next few decades if the cooling influence of human-generated aerosols declines. When this is taken into account, the implied warming for the current level of greenhouse gases is more than 2°C.
