Direct air capture machines suck CO2 from atmosphere. Are they part of the solution to climate change?

Climeworks has priced its DAC offsets at about $US775 ($1,094) a tonne and says this will fall as low as $US250 ($353) by the end of the decade.

Before it’s too little too late, again, is Angus buying and investing in DAC

The march of the Arctic trees and what it reveals about the climate crisis

The Arctic Treeline circles the world in an almost unbroken ring, almost like a green halo. But as the climate warms the trees are marching towards the pole at an unprecedented speed, turning the white Arctic green. It’s not the same story across the Arctic, but as writer Ben Rawlence discovered during his visits between 2018-2020, strange things are happening wherever you look in the boreal forest, and it’s threatening ancient ways of life.
— Read on http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/latenightlive/the-march-of-the-arctic-trees-and-what-it-reveals-about-the-cli/13726420

Lungs of the Planet more in boreal forest surrounding Arctic than Amazon. It’s warming faster than most. Sami have names for each and every reindeer, not just Rudolph.

Shell’s ‘Milestone’ CCS Plant Emits More Carbon Than It Captures

four out of five U.S. CCUS projects have been written off as failures. And 81% of the carbon captured to date through CCUS has been pumped underground to force more oil to the surface

more $Billions wasted on yet another project which only delays proven effective real action on climate.

In our back yard – How much longer can @AngusTaylorMP get away with wasting taxpayers $Billions on brown coal to hydrogen, no hope in competition with green hydrogen and, as above, no hope of promised CCS to make this, in any way, “clean hydrogen”.

Renewable hydrogen costs “expected to plummet” by 2030 – here’s how

New BloombergNEF research says 2022 is set to mark an inflection point for global green hydrogen investment – provided governments get on board.

so how long before @AngusTaylorMP stops wasting taxpayers money on brown coal to hydrogen?

AEMO’s coal power retirement plans under fire from AER

The Australian Energy Regulator is locking horns with the Australian Energy Market Operator over phasing out coal-powered electricity.
— Read on www.afr.com/companies/energy/aemo-told-to-reassess-death-of-coal-power-20220109-p59mvd

Blah, blah, blah, why does this endless sermon disregard that big old coal fired power can only be run at 100%? Reduced power means low pressure steam danger if condensed water droplets preening turbine blades. Especially with brown coal, quality variations do cause danger of reduced output. Boilers are the height of 20 storey buildings. Conflict between more steam tubes and ash build up and bridging, corrected by shutdown, cool down scaffolding and jack hammers. Corrosion inside as well as outside of boiler tubes, leaks causing ash set like concrete. With Hazelwood, 8 x 200MW turbines, possible to reduce some to idle but newer 500MW are all or nothing.

Does AER not understand nature of problem, ever worse beyond 40 year use by date.

Ultra-low cost solar “stretch goal” gets federal funding boost

ARENA opens up to $40m in funding to expressions of interest from projects that promise to materially reduce the levelised cost of solar.
— Read on reneweconomy.com.au/ultra-low-cost-solar-stretch-goal-gets-federal-funding-boost/

ARENA said the R&D funding program would be aligned with the Agency’s own ambitious target of ‘Solar 30 30 30’, to improve solar cell efficiency to 30 per cent and reduce the total cost of construction of utility scale solar farms to 30 cents per watt by 2030.” Not good news for fossils.

Forest people offer the best hope of saving them

23 August, 2021 − Trees are vital for solving the climate crisis. But there’s nothing simple about the forested world, as forest people know.
— Read on www.theenergymix.com/2021/08/23/forest-people-offer-the-best-hope-of-saving-them/

A must read, extra context, next time drought in Murray Darling is news, reflect on 18 to 24Billion trees now down to 8Billion and tree farming not much help compared with way Nature can make recovery

Shipping Liquid Hydrogen Would Be At Least 5 Times As Expensive As LNG Per Unit Of Energy – CleanTechnica

Projects proposing to make hydrogen where sunshine and wind are constant & ship it to where energy is needed are based on hand-waving, ignorance or larceny.
— Read on cleantechnica.com/2021/12/20/shipping-liquid-hydrogen-would-be-at-least-5-times-as-expensive-as-lng-per-unit-of-energy/

Originally, advantage here was so much land space for onshore wind farms. But now offshore proven to be competitive. Boris and little old UK boasting they’re set to be Saudi for hydrogen. Same again for any country adjacent to ocean.

Pity so much H2 obsession with Scomo.
