If you figured Coalition couldn’t get much sillier….

1937389_720273641408101_4949744163460383363_nMedia release from Pyne and Frydenberg, you’ll need a comfortable seat to save yourself from being knocked over by breathtaking ineptitude of – “Energy Resource Growth Centre Launched” – all fossil fuels with no future. Must renewables, the real future, wait until next century?

Mythkonceptions_Qld coal

About many exaggerations, spun by proponents and politicians, crazy example being more revenue from vehicle rego than coal, such big exports but such small change paid back into Australia?  A5_QldCoalP

True cost of coal

rsz_shutterstock_153927020Contrary to dominant views about the industry, coal-fired power is not the cheapest fuel and its value to the community is dubious. Yet this polluting industry continues to enjoy unjustifiable support…Doctors for the Environment (DEA) has serious concerns about Australia’s addiction to coal. The health impacts of mining, transporting and burning coal are well known and pose one of the most significant health issues of our time. The only rationale for using coal is that it is the cheapest source of energy … But according to the research, it’s not!..A CSIRO analysis details expectations that solar thermal with storage will compete with coal as early as 2016. reneweconomy.com.au/2012/csiro-to-lead-

Frydenberg’s coal bubble needs to burst

Frydenberg said he wants to “dispel the fallacy” that the sector is in trouble, but his spin rings hollow. Net profit margins among producers of iron ore, coking coal, thermal coal, and liquid natural gas speak much louder of what’s actually happening. So do the vast recent coal and gas investment write-offs by BHP Bilton, Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Glencore, and Rio Tinto, not to mention the collapse in the stock prices of these companies…“Fallacy” is not the problem.

Fossil fuel industry must ‘implode’ to avoid climate disaster

Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber,  adviser to German government and Pope Francis, said on Friday: “In the end it is a moral decision. Do you want to be part of the generation that screwed up the planet for the next 1,000 years? I don’t think we should make that decision.”..Schellnhuber was speaking at a major science conference in Paris, taking place before a crunch UN summit in December, .. World leaders were sent a stark message in communique.. warned that opportunity to avoid disaster rapidly diminishing…induced implosion of carbon economy over the next 20-30 years. Otherwise we have no chance of avoiding dangerous, perhaps disastrous, climate change.”

“The promise of the fossil fuel age has never been fulfilled,” he said. “We still have 2bn people living on $2 (£1.30) a day – that is crazy.” He called for two strong messages: that “the age of carbon is over” and that “it is not the poor of the world who will pay for the transition”.

To achieve these outcomes, Schellnhuber said: “We need a global social movement and it is already happening.” He said the best analogy for the transition from dirty to clean energy was abolition of slavery, which was fundamentally driven by ethical concerns…tackling climate change is economically affordable, but nations “waiting on the sidelines” will cause costs to rise…Stiglitz backed affordability of tackling climate change: “Creating a green economy is not only consistent with economic growth, it can promote economic growth,” especially when there is a lack of demand in the global economy.

He said the best option for an enforceable climate deal was for willing countries to introduce carbon taxes and then penalise nations refusing to do the same with border taxes on their exported goods…A voluntary agreement cannot solve the climate crisis, he said: “The atmosphere is a public good – all want to get the benefits, but no one wants to pay the cost.” He also dismissed carbon markets as being too prone to political lobbying: “It is basically giving away money.”

$41B to fossil fuels as cost renewables attacked

..cost of renewable energy.against. current energy supply, largely coal dominated, may also be costing us…The policy wonks at the International Monetary Fund have been trying to shed some light on that in recent times. Back in May they released a paper projecting that this year the world would subsidise energy consumption – mostly coal, gas and petroleum – by an astonishing $6.6 trillion…All up the IMF projected Australia would subsidise coal, petroleum and gas consumption by $41 billion in 2015…The IMF finds amid total $41 billion Australian subsidy to coal, gas and petroleum energy use in 2015, global warming and air pollution represents about $25 billion…Other work previously attempted to break down these types of costs to individual power plants. In April a study by two Harvard fellows estimated the social cost of the Hazelwood power station in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley was $900 million a year.

Wonthaggi playground for wind turbine blades

playground-made-of-rotor-blades-590x393It’s a while ago now that one of the wind turbines at Wonthaggi was struck by lightning. Loss of one turbine is not a big deal, not compared with big coal fired generator going off line. Blades need to be replaced in complete matched sets, so remaining 2 blades are now to offer value to the community as addition to kiddies playground, per this example in Rotterdam.

Emissions Reduction – problem with transport

This week, a new report released by the federal government – a discussion paper on vehicle emissions, issued as part of a Ministerial Forum into reducing the environmental and health impacts of transport pollution – adds to the gloom…It illustrates, via the graph below, just how tough Australia’s comparatively modest emissions abatement task will be; and how little the Coalition’s Emissions Reduction Fund will contribute to the overall effort.

CSIRO climate scientists – how can we all help?

Please join protest about crazy $$$M cuts by Coalition’s new CEO of CSIRO. He wants to adapt while Coalition need even better science before they’ll be convinced.
