Coalition raids CEFC again, $100M more, for green cities fund fiasco

But industry and green groups say the move constitutes the third such “redirection” of CEFC funding, with $1 billion withdrawn for a loan scheme, and another $1 billion to fund the Great Barrier Reef.. ..Effectively, nearly one third of the supposed independent CEFC’s budget has been corralled by the government for “pet projects’ announced during and in the lead up to the election campaign…“This government has twice tried to axe the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. It’s tried to axe the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), it’s taken the axe to the Renewable Energy Target and now it plans to slash $1.3 billion from ARENA.“Today’s announcement is not new money. It is simply using the Clean Energy Finance Corporation as its slush fund,” Grimes said.

AGL chief, coal closure inevitable but painful

Mainly a scare about price rises, despite renewables bringing prices down. If only Hazelwood had paid more than next to nothing for coal and nothing for pollution damage, prices would definitely decrease.  Lest we forget, it was John Howard who divisionalised, corporatised, federalised and privatised chaos into electricity industry. It was this, not carbon tax, which caused prices to double since 2006, caused by “independent” regulators rubber stamping $75B into more poles and wires. Hazelwood is 8 separate gen sets so, if a worry, why not just hibernate part and see if anybody can see any difference?

Research worries, at risk – solar to power the planet

7448160-3x2-700x467Solar cells are now so efficient and so cheap, that it’s feasible for Australia to source all of its own electricity from solar cells, and theoretically, supply power for the whole planet.

One in four Volkswagens to be electric by 2025

..large-scale shake-up for one of the world’s top three carmakers at a press conference in Germany on Thursday. Thirty pure electric vehicles are planned for the next decade… up to a quarter of VW’s global sales – or up to 3 million cars – will be EVs by halfway through the next decade…autonomous driving solutions, as it sets out to develop its own in-house AI-based driverless system by 2020. Mobility solutions – such as ride hailing services like Uber, robotic taxis and car sharing – will also become a plank in the company’s strategy,  by 2025.

American ‘weaponised philanthropy’

For two people who have never held elected office, billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, are without a doubt the most influential people in American politics. But although they are shaping American life at every level, few ordinary Americans know their names. They go to great lengths to keep their work secret. After long campaign, in 2010, Federal Law was changed so there’s no limit to $ they can  spend on political campaigning, lobbyists, think tanks etc. With friends for 2016 election, they’re chipping in $989Million, no less! The empire started with father Fred, who in early 1930’s, when USA was bankrupt, built 15 petrochem refineries for Stalin and more for Hitler. Main campaigns support fossil fuels, reduce government and taxes and anything to do with renewable energy.Regardless of drastic campaign to undermine Obama, in the last 8 years, their fortunes have tripled to $46Billion, each. Quite a story of might and power taken on by climate activists.

UCG banned immediately in Queensland, laws to follow, Mines Minister Anthony Lynham say

Underground coal gasification (UCG) will be banned in Queensland due to its environmental impact, Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham says. There had been only three UCG pilot projects in Queensland — Carbon Energy near Dalby, Cougar Energy near Kingaroy and Linc Energy at Chinchilla. Dr Lynham said no-one had made a success of UCG yet and potential revenue was not worth the environmental risk. “We have looked at the evidence from the pilot operation of UCG and we’ve considered the compatibility of the current technologies with Queensland’s environment and our economic needs,” he said in a statement.

“The potential risks to Queensland’s environment and our valuable agricultural industries far outweigh any potential economic benefits.
Mr Hutton said on Friday that Linc Energy could face up to $56 million in fines if found guilty. But he said the penalty might never be paid, as going into administration was a common legal manoeuvre to dodge fines and costly clean-ups.

Note – not so long ago, UCG was said to be a favoured option in Gippsland, just shallow drilling into upper layer brown coal!!

Are Australians really prepared to let the Great Barrier Reef die?

1465555903408All over the world the Great Barrier Reef is making front page news. The world is watching how Australia exercises its duty of care over this most loved international icon.’As warming seas kill off one of the world’s natural wonders, researchers are calling for urgent action,’ Britons read in The Guardian newspaper this week. ‘Last chance to save Great Barrier Reef, warn scientists’, the headline read. Inside, a double-page spread with large colour photos was headed, ‘Bare bones: how climate change is bleaching the world’s reefs to death’.

In our case, we are arguing that the Minister’s approval of the massive coal mine is inconsistent with Australia’s international obligations to protect the Great Barrier Reef, which is a World Heritage site, protected by UN convention. I don’t believe Australians will let the Great Barrier Reef die. But it will take more than just hopes and goodwill to save it. We will need to convince our politicians that it is time to say no to proposals like Adani’s Carmichael proposal and create a future that is coal free.We need to ask ourselves: are we as a nation so in thrall to the coal industry that we are willing to let the reef perish?

Demise of Great Barrier Reef

7499802-3x2-340x227Dr John (Charlie) Veron, otherwise known as ‘godfather of coral’, has been diving off the Great Barrier Reef for 45 years and says the level of deterioration reached so far means that in future, no-one will ever be able to experience it in the way he has…He will soon launch a ‘Corals of the World’ website that aims to preserve the Great Barrier Reef in digital form.

Note – here’s an expert noticeably distressed about lack of action
