Burning house surfing flood waters

A burning house being carried away by flood waters is as vivid a metaphor for global climate catastrophe as I’ve ever seen.

The sad fact about working class people who have supported right wing politics historically in the US, is that they are themselves so often victims of policies their political heroes advocate.  This is certainly true in areas of environment and climate, and yet another of those increasingly common “one in a thousand year” events in West Virginia illustrates vividly. The storm dumped 9 inches of rain on parts of West Virginia.

Electricity not in election when prices double and triple

However, this is all a bit strange, because wholesale electricity prices have almost doubled over what they were at the equivalent stage of the last election cycle. Incredibly, they are 300% above what they were in the 2010 election…relevant here because carbon pricing was applied at the wholesale level…While we suspect the Prime Minister really does know this, we also know he is bound by a party room that is still a long way away from abandoning ideology for rationality, on this issue at least.

Thousands of cities, 6 Continents, just agreed to work on Climate Change

Thousands of cities from six continents united Wednesday to create the largest global coalition committed to battling human-caused climate change and pushing the world into a low-carbon economy…About 75% of global CO2 emissions come from cities, and most are attributed to transportation and buildings, according to United Nations Environment Programme…essential for cities to be involved in the fight against climate change. That’s because unlike countries, cities can innovate faster, and are less hampered by national politics when moving towards clean energy and low carbon infrastructure..As of 2014, 228 cities around the world have set greenhouse gas reduction goals and targets amounting to a reduction of 13 gigatons of CO2 emissions by 2050.. ..Another report …save 450 megatons of CO2 emissions — an amount equal to the annual emissions of the UK — by 2020.

Coalition usurps CORE hard work already

Recent polling shows 63% of Australians likely to vote for parties supporting renewable energy.  As such, it isn’t surprising that the Coalition is trying to tap into this popularity. Recently, Coalition  $5 million Solar Communities Program, with pre-selection of recipient community groups being announced and interestingly, so far only in the marginal seats they stand to lose in Queensland – Bonner, Petrie, Brisbane, Forde and Fisher (as well as Bass in Tasmania and Mayo SA)…<calling it>“community solar” Coalition is tapping into hard work of over 70 community energy groups developing innovative local clean energy initiatives, without doing anything to support these groups.  Done well, strong community renewable energy policy will provide not just low carbon energy, but local economic benefits and jobs for local communities. If the Coalition were serious – they would initiate a program much smarter than just granting one-off small amounts of money to install solar on community organisations in marginal seats.”

Note – this is puny $5Million, not even small change for Commissar Turnbull

A century of healing

We’ve “wounded” the planet in a thousand ways. It will never return to what it was, but we can give it space for its ecosystems to recover and flourish, we can give it space and time to heal. So says Steb Fisher, who suggests that none of this can happen unless we, humanity, agree to work together. But we will not give up our petty jealousies, our resentments

Ian Dunlop, a former Chair of the Australian Coal Association and former CEO of the Australian Institute of Company Directors says: “We are out of time for gradualist policy. Why frack off Brexit might improve Europe’s Environment

Brexit/Britain is opposing — along with oil and gas industry — an EU proposal to monitor methane emissions from fracking. Government officials called it “unnecessary red tape,” according to the Guardian, but they are clearly either not interested in addressing climate change or they are completely ignoring the lessons of the United States. The United States has seen a 30 percent spike in methane emissions since 2002 — enough to nullify any climate benefit from the country’s switch from coal-fired power generation to natural gas.

Coalition raids CEFC. again, $100m green cities fund

…news release Coal-ition… latest policy proposal green cities fund…industry and green groups say this $100M move constitutes the third such “redirection” of CEFC funding, with $1 billion withdrawn for car loan scheme, and another $1 billion to fund the Great Barrier Reef. “The Turnbull government is again showing utter hypocrisy by raiding the Clean Energy Finance Corporation for its latest election stunt,” said ASC chief John Grimes..“This government has twice tried to axe Clean Energy Finance Corporation. It’s tried to axe the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), it’s taken the axe to the Renewable Energy Target and now it plans to slash $1.3 billion from ARENA…“Today’s announcement is not new money. It’s simply using the CEFC as its slush fund,”…stimulate private sector investment in projects like renewable energy installations, improved transport management systems and retrofitting of public housing estates more energy efficient.

Note-usual vague plan, so wide ranging, so no accountability
