‘Extraordinarily hot’ Arctic temperatures alarm scientists

Danish and US researchers say warmer air and sea surface could lead to record lows of sea ice at north pole next year. The Arctic is experiencing extraordinarily hot sea surface and air temperatures, which are stopping ice forming and could lead to record lows of sea ice at the north pole next year, according to scientists. Danish and US researchers monitoring satellites and Arctic weather stations are surprised and alarmed by air temperatures peaking at what they say is an unheard-of 20C higher than normal for the time of year. In addition, sea temperatures averaging nearly 4C higher than usual in October and November…Temperatures have been only a few degrees above freezing when -25C should be expected, according to Francis. “These temperatures are literally off the charts for where they should be at this time of year. It is pretty shocking. The Arctic has been breaking records all year. It is exciting but also scary,” she said.

About Gen4 nuke thorium reactors

Have always been intrigued by these things but only ever found confusion of strong opinions, for and against. Finally happened across rational explanation of the technology along with irrational cancellation by politicians. Sounds like they could have been a magic silver bullet but our favourite planet likely to be in socio-political collapse before this technology could ever be revived – Extract from James Hansen ” Storms for my grandchildren”, Atoms for Peace:

Richard Nixon in his June 4, 1970 presidential energy message to Congress said “Our best hope today for meeting the nation’s growing demand for economical, clean energy lies with the fast breeder reactor.” USA had top nuclear experts in the world and the top .. was Argonne National Laboratory. A low level of support allowed steady progress to continue until, in 1994, the Argonne scientists had tested all necessary  components and were ready to build a demonstration  fast reactor power plant. At that point, the Clinton-Gore administration cancelled the program. In his 1994 State of the Union address, Bill Clinton announced “we will terminate unnecessary programs in advanced reactor development”. Argonne scientists  were told not only to stop the research but also to dismantle the project, with all involved instructed by DOE to not publicise it.

Like em or hate em, no sense holding your breath expecting them to rise from landfill site any time soon.

Westerners urged to reduce carbon footprint

Top UK climate scientist says global carbon emissions could be cut by a third within a year if well-off westerners changed their lifestyle.

LONDON, 21 January, 2017 – Global carbon emissions could be cut by one-third within 12 months if affluent westerners changed their way of life, claims a leading climate change scientist. Kevin Anderson, professor of energy and climate change at Manchester University, in the UK, says a major reduction in personal air travel is a key starting point.More than half of the carbon dioxide pollution that causes a large part of global warming comes from the 10% best-off people on the planet, he argues.
Carbon footprint “Let’s be clear about this. If the top 10 high emitters – people like you and me and others – if we reduce our carbon footprint just to the level of the average European, it would be a one-third cut in global emissions.“I genuinely think we could achieve it in one year, but we would have to think that climate change is a very serious issue, and that has big political implications.”
Those of us who are high emitters …. need to rapidly curtail how often we fly. We should not be flying on any occasion business class or first class because that has far higher emissions. We need to find alternatives to flying. “But in addition we need to make sure that we are not living in larger houses and have many houses, and drive larger cars.

Pollution cruise ships

The volume of air saturated to the air quality objective concentration each minute for (left to right): NOx, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5 pollutionThe volume of air saturated to the air quality objective concentration each minute for (left to right): NOx, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5 pollution

“We have been thinking about how to visualise local air pollution for some time. This was an opportunity for us to show not just the volumes of pollutants, but more importantly the volume of air required to safely hold those pollutants. We think seeing the volumes in this way makes it real – a pre-requisite for better decision making.”
— Dr Adam Nieman, Creative Director, Real World Visuals

The consultants’ report provides figures for cruise ship they deem typical.  Elsewhere in the Report the cruise ship Crystal Symphony is mentioned as the largest that can get into the new dock.  This vessel would emit 2.5 to 3 times more NOx than shown in the images.

An argument used by supporters of the terminal was that vessels would be using ‘low sulphur’ diesel which is ‘very similar to automotive diesel’.  This is misleading.  Since 2009 in the EU the maximum sulphur content for automotive diesel has been 10 ppm, which is 10,000 times less than ‘low sulphur’ marine diesel (we are looking at creating an image to show this too)…The problem of excessive air pollution from stationary cruise ships in cities is however easily solved by installing shore-to-ship power systems, so the national grid can be used and onboard diesel power is not required.

How poor countries develop rich countries

If we add theft through trade in services to the mix, it brings total net resource outflows to about $3tn per year…That’s 24 times more than the aid budget. In other words, for every $1 of aid that developing countries receive, they lose $24 in net outflows…But by far the biggest network of tax havens is centered around the City of London, which controls secrecy jurisdictions throughout the British Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories…In other words, some of the very countries that so love to tout their foreign aid contributions are the ones enabling mass theft from developing countries.
Note – our aid budget in Australia is down to 0.2% of GNI(Gross National Income) but it is one of ours who is CEO of Green Energy Fund, to help developing countries reduce emissions, just a bloke, negligible cash

Cooling Sun v Earth Warming

Figure 3. Global temperature change (thin light red line), as reported by NASA/GISS, together with the annual total solar irradiance, or TSI (thin light blue). The dark red and dark blue lines show the 11-year moving averages. Data sources: Temperature from NASA GISS, and TSI from 1880 to 1978 from Krivova et al 2007 (data). TSI from 1979 to 2015 from PMOD (see the PMOD index page for data updates). Image credit: Courtesy skepticalscience.com.

Newly precise measurements confirm that the total solar energy reaching Earth actually doesn’t change all that much from cycle to cycle. As a single cycle ramps up from minimum to maximum, the sun spits out as much as 10 times more energy in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. However, the sun’s total energy output (irradiance) goes up by a mere 0.1% during a solar cycle, and this boosts global surface temperature by no more than 0.1°Cper cycle, according to IPCC( Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change).

Carbon budget already blown for 1.5degC

https://www.mcc-berlin.net/fileadmin/data/clock/carbon_clock.htm

So far, there is no track record for reducing emissions globally. Instead, greenhouse gas emissions have been rising at a faster pace during the last decade than previously—despite growing awareness and political action across the globe.”..Researchers have found that the commitments that countries made in the Paris agreement don’t go far enough to keep warming under 1.5 degrees—or even under 2 degrees…”While countries were able to agree upon adequate long-term climate policy targets, they have not been able to match these long-term ambitions with appropriate short-term actions,” says Löhe. “In fact, short-term emission reduction commitments by countries so far—the so-called nationally determined contributions (NDCs)—will only slow the growth in global greenhouse gas emissions rather than starting an era of substantial and sustained emission reductions.”

2degC impossible, international inaction global warming out of control

The world can no longer avoid dangerous global warming because countries have done little to tackle the problem apart from spout “rhetoric”, a leading economist has warned…Professor William Nordhaus, of Yale University in the US, said it was no longer practicably feasible to keep the level of warming to within two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the point at which climatologists believe the world will start to experience particularly dangerous climate change…This would see devastating storms, droughts, deadly heat waves and floods all become significantly more common, making some areas of the planet increasingly difficult for humans to inhabit…The US military, among others, has expressed concern about the security implications of the mass movements of people that such scenarios would likely bring about.

Highly respected climatologists, like James Hansen, judge trend is most pessimistic of IPCC projections, catastrophic 600ppm and 6 degC.
