Time to stop subsidies to aluminium smelters

News item linked here advises, because of world over supply in new smelters, no smelters are viable . Aluminium smelting uses so much energy that it’s known as “congealed electricity”. In Victoria, our brown coal power is the dirtiest, with big losses in long transmission lines. Of course, they still make a profit because taxpayer subsidies are so generous that they pay only 1.5cents/kWh and they’re exempt from paying huge amounts of carbon tax, all told, close to $1Billion/year. Surely such huge cash handout could be spent more wisely?
