New generation nuclear designs remain elusive

New generation nuclear power stations that produce cheap electricity and less waste always seem about to appear, but so far they have not materialised, promises for the last 18 years, by the United States Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) as a way to provide cheap and plentiful supplies of electricity, are unlikely to be fulfilled any time in the next 30 years.

How giant seaweed farms can feed fish and fix the climate

This story publicises  Sunlight and Seaweed: An Argument for How to Feed, Power and Clean Up the World by Tim Flannery, published by Text Publishing, describing how large offshore rafts, 1km or so square, buoyed 25m below sea surface, can be used to tether ropes, to create healthy new environments growing plant material, giant kelp, seagrass and others, to support growth of shellfish and fish. Kelp can grow as much as 600mm per day, absorbing at least 10 times more CO2 than rainforest, also reducing acidity in seawater to improve conditions for marine life.

Hey Barnaby-Small cost to keep (African) forests safe

Forests more valuable standing than cleared. US economists have found how to subsidise protecting African forests at the village level.
Economists have just shown that, at least sometimes, money does grow on the trees of African forests. By paying villagers in Uganda quite small sums not to clear the forest on their land, they changed collective behaviour and more than halved the expected tree loss.
And they demonstrated that the rewards of preserving forest were in cash terms more than 2.4 times greater than the monetary cost of saving the woodland, according to a new study in the journal Science

So what will it take to prevent Barnaby Joyce and fellow vandals from resumption of land clearing, back up to 40 footy fields per day?

VW EV’s soon but long wait in Oz

ev graph - cleantechnicaVW new model ID is mass market EV, similar in size to Golf, scheduled for first release in Germany 2018. Expectations are better performance and price than Tesla Model 3 and cheaper, equivalent price of Golf diesel. As with July 2017 Golf, new models  always get new electronic whizz bangs, touch screens etc but even new petrol engines will be saved for other markets. Because our standards are so low, Australia is a dumping ground for other car brands low spec engines and low car prices, so market share for VW and others is undermined by cheapness. It will take many of us to hustle our leaders to get with 21st century.

Empty robo cop cars

The model O-R3 autonomous security robot manufactured by Singapore-based Otsaw Digital.

How about this for innovation and entrepreneurship? In Dubai already, cops can safely and comfortably stay driving a desk, while driverless cop cars cover the beat, continuously gathering video, performing face and rego plate recognition. Inevitably, these things aren’t designed for high speed pursuit but  each car is teamed with a drone which can track at high speed so intercept can be organised.

Cap aviation emissions when?

Target not from 1990, not 2000, not 2005  but however much more they can consume in 2020! They damage the stratosphere, cause global dimming and don’t even pay excise to help with consequences.

At the 39th Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) which concluded on October 7, 2016, Member States adopted the CORSIA. The CORSIA is a global carbon off setting initiative that aims to stabilize net emissions from international aviation at 2020 levels; any additional emissions above 2020 levels will have to be off set.
