Solar, EVs and energy storage among the few technologies keeping pace with energy transition goals

IEA reports that some countries are pulling their weight but not here. Amazing news about EVs:

EVs

The IEA was also pleased with global EV uptake after another record year for sales – 1.98 million vehicles – raised the total stock to 5.12 million. Sales increased 68% in 2018, more than twice the average year-on-year growth required to meet the Sustainable Development Scenario by 2030, the IEA said. In that scenario, 15% of the global car fleet is electric by 2030, an ambition that requires annual average growth of 30% from 2018 to 2030.

To Make Headway on Climate Change, Let’s Change the Subject

The solar bill is part of the ongoing recuperation in South Carolina from an attempt to build a new nuclear power plant. That turned into a debacle, with repeated cost overruns and construction problems finally leading to the cancellation of the plant. South Carolinians will be paying for their $9 billion hole in the ground for many years to come.
But how to discuss the subject? For that we should look not just to states like Colorado but, interestingly enough, also to a state under complete Republican control: South Carolina.

The industry was careful with words, though. Tyler Norris, who helped craft the bill on behalf of South Carolina’s solar industry association, told me that the focus was on the direct benefits to the people of the state.

“I don’t know that the terms ‘climate change’ or ‘global warming’ were ever uttered in the entire year and a half of advocacy and debate around this,” Mr. Norris said.

The final vote in the South Carolina Senate was 46-0, and in the House, 103-0. You read that right.

Canavan shrugs off greenhouse gas emissions increase

Canavan has front enough to say that it’s gas exports from Australia causing big emissions increases, so we should get credits because these exports replace emissions intensive fuels, like coal, in export destination countries.

If this would make any sense at all, surely we should also cop liability for being close to biggest coal exporter. He even says international reports need to be “balanced”, what a clown.

Natural Gas Is Now Called ‘Freedom Gas,’ According to the Department of Energy

But beyond the farcical language, nothing could be further from the truth about natural gas being a pathway to freedom. Natural gas is a source of methane and carbon dioxide, both greenhouse gases that are cooking the planet. And gas itself is a reason why U.S. emissions rose last year. Exporting it locks countries into generating energy from a dirty (albeit slightly less dirty than coal) fuel and puts the world on track to climate chaos.
