Energy/Exports – New study: price carbon at point of fossil fuel extraction

With rising cost of ever more extreme weather events, our politicians cannot afford to remain hostage to fossil fuel industry moguls. In world rankings, except for a very few oil sheikdoms, Australia is the winner for most GHG(greenhouse gas) emissions 27 tonne/person/year. Even more embarassing, these rankings are based on what we burn inside our borders.

Meanwhile, we’re close to exporting as much again, if not more, in coal and LNG. Obviously we benefit from such exports. The study below recommends that carbon tax be paid both before export and at destination country, raising prices to put the brakes on dangerously increasing world demand for dirty power. An international carbon tax system is needed so that our companies, like  Bluescope Steel, Hastings, can compete with the Chinese steel industry(based on iron ore and coal from Australia!)
