New global climate ranking sees Australia go from “dead last to far from a pass” | Climate Councilok

Australia has climbed just four places to rank 55th out of 63 in this year’s global Climate Change Performance Index 2023, launched at COP27 in Egypt, a slight improvement on last year’s where it came in dead last for climate policy.

“Emissions peaking before 2025 as the science tells us is necessary? Not in this text,” he said. “Clear follow-through on the phasedown of coal? Not in this text. Clear commitment to phase out all fossil fuels? Not in this text.

The energy text? Weakened in the final minutes. The resulting COP decision “is not enough of a step forward for people and planet,”

The reference “was slipped into the final version of the deal at the very last minute,” the news report adds.
