Here’s a review of accumulated mythology of “clean coal”, old and new. Minister for unEnvironment Greg Hunt has recently been proclaiming, yet again, that he’s confident of breakthroughs in the next 5years. What he’s taking about is the DICE engine, a back shed development by CSIRO in the late 1970’s, the only example is a single cylinder 4 litre thumper. It runs on finely ground coal, in a water slurry, through a modified diesel fuel injector. If it could possibly be scaled up to sensible power output, previous efforts around the world have proved to be maintenance intensive. Hunt says DICE will make brown coal as clean as black coal!! How ’bout that? Otherwise, taxpayer subsidies to private sector developers did nothing more than open up vast coal mines in Hunter Valley. Cowboys insisted they needed rights to big coal fields for development of small prototypes!?! No engines were ever seen but huge profits were gifted when rights were sold to Exxon-Mobil and others. Time to ask Greg to stop it or he’ll go blind.
