By now, we all know about gold plating by electricity distribution companies, so many more big poles and wires, to cope with so much increase in peak power supply, when demand is actually decreasing. From some of the cheapest power in the world, privatisation now means we’re amongst most expensive. Now power stations are trying the same trick, asking State Ministers for Energy to give them taxpayer handouts, to keep coal burning for steam up to pressure, just in case it’s needed. This obviously means confessing they can’t compete with solar and wind on hot summer days, when aircon, very occasionally, makes big power demand(National auction system allows bids up to $12.90/kWh!). Anyhow, looks like they’re too late. At recent COAG meeting, Ministers were not persuaded. It sucks though, that cleaner, newer, gas and black coal power stations are too expensive while dirty dinosaurs, like Hazelwood win, exporting big bucks as world’s best performing asset for Gdf-SUEZ. This might be because they don’t actually make any kind of royalty payment for brown coal bonanza. Howzat?!?
